Day 20: A drama you started but can’t finish

31 Mar

Short answer: Too many.

How many times have you started a drama and adored it for exactly three episodes, then it suddenly changes on you and becomes this hideous thing that gives you violent thoughts and makes you think about the multiple ways the main characters can die a terrible death?

No, just us then? Muhaha.

For us, this is the most disappointing thing about being a drama fan. Your fangirl senses start tingling and you become all obsessive thinking about the drama all day and counting down the days till the next episode is out. You pin your hopes on it thinking that just maybe this is ‘the one’ or ‘the one right now’ and then wham bam – it’s over and you’re left thinking, why the hell did we waste all those hours in the first place?

Or worse, you are forced to shelve a drama because real life happens and you literally don’t have the time to watch it. The thing about returning to a shelved drama is that it’s lost that ‘in the moment’ crack factor and we can rarely bring ourselves to return to it despite loving it while tuned in. Sadly for us, we have dropped/ shelved a lot of dramas over the years for this reason alone. Damn you real life, you are a drama junkies nightmare!

A few notable dramas that fall under this category:

Office Girls:

We know what you’re thinking – weren’t they obsessing and gushing over this drama for ages? Yes we were, we admit it but honestly that drama extension killed Office Girls for us. We followed the drama through other blogger’s recaps and frankly that was more than enough for us. Some of those recaps were painful to read as it looked like the final part of the drama was dragged out to max as the television station milked this money maker for all it was worth.

At least Office Girls finally brought attention to our beloved Roy Qiu – no more love rival roles for this guy. Yay!

What’s Up:

We literally have two episodes to go but still we can’t bring ourselves to finish it and we don’t know why!! Seriously, the drama is brilliant and we’re thoroughly engrossed when we’re tuned in but as soon as we switch off, it takes a lot of effort to want to watch more.

Don’t look at us like that- we swear we’ll finish it soon!

Sungkyunkwan Scandal:

This was a drama that we were so utterly obsessed with and in love with for so long –(read our posts for proof – gush central!) and then subbing restrictions were applied and we were forced to go cold turkey. Trust us – we weren’t ready for that. Eventually when subs suddenly started popping up we had moved on to something else and never returned to the awesomeness that is Sungkyunkwan Scandal and all that hot bromance.

Finally there are the dramas that we started and then quickly dropped because they were frankly…crap:

Ring, Ring Bell, Drunken to love you, The Colour of a Woman, Thorn Bird (UGH).

Sadly for us this list is rather long and we could be here for a while.

Belated Merry Christmas to everyone

26 Dec

We've been MIA for the better part of a month due to real life being insanely busy but we're glad to say that we are back and as always we've got plenty to say!

The drama season has picked up and suddenly we've found ourselves with so many good dramas to pick from. What's a girl to do with so many options…?

Our currently watching list:

What’s Up? – we’ve got our fingers crossed it’s a winner. So far soooo good!

The Color of a Woman – mindless fluff. Exactly what we need for the Christmas holidays.

Skip Beat! – we must really love Siwon and Donghae if we’re willing to put up with their awful dubbing. Aside from that, we love Ivy Chen’s leading lady and the fact that they have stayed true to the original. It’s all looking very promising.

Hold list for various reasons:

Ring Ring Bell – see bitch post below.

Office Girls – overexposed fandom is a major turn off for the Musthavesubs girls. Plus, how dare they extend this drama, when it barely had enough plot to cover its original run!?

My Love by My Side – we plan to marathon this one soon, it’s the only way we manage to get through the mid section of a long family drama.

Wish List:

Padam, Padam – everyone seems to love this drama. Plus, we’re suddenly seeing Kim Bum differently, seriously he’s looking HAWT!

Girl K – this looks ridiculously good.

Me too, Flower – we were all set to watch this one but then we read how the second half tanked. We’ve decided to leave it until we know how it all turns out at the end.

We've missed you dramaland- we're so glad to be back!

Mid Week Rambles

16 Nov

December seems so far away:

Skip Beat! promos are out and Oooh lala, Siwon and Donghae look HAWT! We can’t wait for December to come.

We’re really hoping that Siwon doesn’t give us a boring depiction of Ren. It’s so easily done with such a complicated character, who often communicates more through his facial expressions than his words. Also we hope that Ivy Chen does well by Kyoko. We love how nutty and evil she is but at the same time she’s so lovable as a character. This Tdrama production better not get imaginative with the manga facts like they did with Hana Yori Dango, or else someone will surely pay!

We’re not going to lie; we’re scared by the prospect of this drama being dubbed. Dubbed dramas have to be the most distracting and annoying dramas to watch ever. We’ve got our fingers crossed that they do a  good job because this manga is so loved that it could get ugly if it’s butchered on screen.

Don’t do this to us T-dramas, you were our only hope…

What was episode 12 of Office Girls all about? Seriously, we’re going to pretend that the episode didn’t happen. It was a complete mess; there was no structure, theme or  real progress. It felt like it was made up of lots of gags (not always funny) badly put together. OG is better than that.

Not even our hesitant OTP could keep us interested. Their date felt contrived and made you question what the hell are they waiting for? They have both acknowledged they like each other, there aren’t any misunderstandings holding them back, so why so cautious?

Come on QZQ- it’s time to man up and show us why we love you.

Ring Ring Bell episode 7 didn’t fare much better. This was the first time since watching this drama where we were unsatisfied by pretty much everything and everyone. We hoped that our OTP working and dating together would provide us with oodles of cute OTP moments and cement our feelings for this couple that never fail to make us smile. However, we were sadly mistaken. The whole set up infuriated us and made us want to shake Xiao Xiang for being so pathetic.

Okay, we’re annoyed at Kia Jai for giving her a job in enemy territory and telling her to get on with it. No support, no job title, not even a flipping desk! He treated her like an object that he thought he’d play with and see how it turns out. However, what’s worse is the fact that she accepted the position and she allowed herself to be treated so poorly by his employees. Where is our leading lady’s pride?

Naturally, she won over her enemies and earned their acceptance in predicable fashion but still…
We like our leading ladies strong and confident – Xiao Xiang needs to get some self esteem pronto and stop being such a loser!

Flower Boy Raman Shop

There is so much fandom surrounding this drama, everyone seems to love it but we’re not sure…
We hate Noona love with a passion, its groan inducing boring for us to watch. However on the other hand we LOVE Jung Il Woo- then again so doesn’t? Plus we like the idea of a tough, former trouble maker as the leading lady.

 Damn that smile.

To watch or not to watch -that is the question?

Office Girls- episode 11

6 Nov

This was a rather quiet but thoughtful episode. Nothing much happened aside from the fact that QZQ manned up and finally admitted his feelings for SXR (to himself) and more importantly put Kai Er out of her misery, hooray! For a filler episode we have no complaints because we’re still smitten with this OTP and could happily watch them bicker all day long.

Let’s talk about the kiss- THE KISS, yay. Okay, it was a peck on the cheek but still…heeee! It was definitely more poignant than if they had a full blown make out session; simply because it was the first tentative step towards acknowledging their feelings for each other. Also it couldn’t have come sooner, we feel like we’ve been impatiently waiting for this moment since episode 1. We love how they’ve taken that slow approach to the OTP’s romance. More often than not the slow burner approach to a OTP romance doesn’t quite work because the couple aren’t compelling enough and yes, it's slow! However this couple have enough spark and underlined chemistry to keep us completely hooked from start to finish. Just look at the way they look at each other, no words needed, their unspoken feelings for each other is written all over their faces. For us, their intense stares speak volumes over a clear cut declaration of love. Plus it’s oh so hot to watch Roy Qiu smoulder his way through scenes. Hehe.

The doll’s house scene played out differently from what we hoped, which consisted of a girly romantic declaration of love and acceptance from the OTP, maybe some crying…you get the picture. However we liked her response to the gift. It was more realistic and definitely something we as a viewer could relate to better than the OTT scene we pictured in our dramatic minds. Naturally the symbolism and gesture of the doll’s house was outrageously romantic already, so we’re pleased enough. Also we love how touched she was by the gesture, she was literally speechless. If she ever doubted his feelings for her, this was the moment that changed everything in the drama.

Other quick thoughts for episode 11:

-Props to the writer for giving us so many lovely OTP moments, honestly it’s always a delight to watch. Favourite OTP moment so far still has to be the promise scene aka the Dinosaur scene. So sweet.

-SXR’s manager and Le Le’s blossoming romance is hilarious. The two funniest people on the show together AND as a couple- We love it.

-We could watch hours of Mama Sen with QZQ – they are just so cute together.

-We still have a zillion episodes to go, we’re scared…we don’t want OG to run out of steam!

Sunday Rambles

30 Oct

As A Thousand’s Day Promise has had such mixed reviews, we’ve decided that maybe it’s best to leave it on the shelf for the time being and see how it plays out. Also, we confess the concept kind of scares us silly, we’re not sure if we can stomach all that angst. The news of this drama did prompt us to finish off A Scent of a Woman– our last unfinished melodrama and boy are we glad we stuck around till the end. We adored it beyond words.

If you haven’t watched A Scent of a Woman– we demand you watch it. It is THAT good.

The Musical: episode 7

Granted we haven’t watched the next episode yet but all we have to say about this episode was- seriously???? We finished the episode and turned to each other dumbfounded by the fact that absolutely nothing happened…NOTHING. It was dull. The OTP were boring together (again), Yu Jin had zero airtime with Eun Bi and yes, they happened to sing the same songs again. For a drama about the production of a musical, you’d think there would be more than one song sung across 9 episodes, just saying.

We know we’ve been generally positive about this drama and that our comments may seem random but we were sitting there and we realised that:

– What is a drama without a decent OTP? Nothing and as we’re shipping the wrong couple that really don’t have a chance of being together- why are we bothering?

What’s Up

Yay!  We’ve wanted to watch this drama forever now and it’s finally been picked up, let’s hope that:

1. it’s subbed – please, someone take pity on us. 2. It meets our expectations or else we’ll cry!

We’ve got our fingers crossed that it’s a winner. We really did think that this drama was going to be permanently shelved after everything that happened with Deasung earlier in the year and the fact that it couldn’t get a slot on one of the main TV stations. However getting aired on Cable is better than not being aired at all, so no complaints from us. Heeeeee, we’re so pleased!

Office Girls: episode 10

He’s finally realised that he loves her! Yay. Watching him come to this realisation was an absolute pleasure.  Plus, we love it when the guy falls for the girl first- we never get bored of that setup.

Ring Ring Bell: first impressions/ episodes 1-4

It’s been a long time since we tuned in to a T-drama, little lone two at once. However now that we’ve dropped The Musical for being BORING and we’re scared of A Thousand Day’s Promise, we’re only really watching Office Girls, which really isn’t enough for our greedy drama addiction.

Ring Ring Bell doesn’t hit the spot like Office Girls but we’re still charmed by how sweet and sentimental it is. Naturally the characters are all messed up and have plenty of issues between them but we love the OTP and think they are wonderful together; natural, sincere and have a healthy spark.

The premise is rather ordinary but that’s okay when we care enough about the characters and their conflicts. So far we haven’t between wowed but it’s a nice, easy watch and it’s definitely a drama worth watching if you’re looking for something pleasant to escape to between your angsty dramas or real life dilemmas.

Final thoughts:

-Me too, Flower boy promo shots are plain disturbing. What were they thinking?

-Thinking about much anticipated dramas- Is the live action version of Skip Beat! ever going to be aired? We want to watch Ren and Sho now!

Office Girls: episodes 2-9

23 Oct

Yes we’ve watched nothing else all week, yes we lapped up Roy and yes we’re very happy musthavesubs girls!

Is this drama technically the best? Hell no but who cares when it’s this much fun.
We’re completely aware that watching a drama in one gulp allows viewers to overlook flaws more easily than say if we were watching on a weekly basis. We can forgive dragged out subplots, repetition and ignore annoying side characters in this case Kai Er.  Our impressions may be tainted and we may look back in reflection and go what were we thinking but for now we’re thoroughly enjoying Roy…we mean this drama! hehe

For us, Office Girls is all about Alice Ke and Roy Qiu as the leads. They manage to take this drama that could easily be quite ordinary and make it fun and so charming to watch. Yes, we’re smitten. Their airtime together is by far the best thing about this drama. We could easily sit and watch them all day long- storyline be damned.

How lovely was the scene where QZQ dressed up as a dinosaur and rounded off his list of promises he was going to keep to SXR.  It was so sincere and so sweet, it was a moment we knew was going to happen but despite this fact it made us very, very happy! Their scenes together have the perfect combination of friendly/ silly banter to really heartfelt moments. It’s so nice to see a drama that manages to effectively present a balanced representation of a blossoming romance. Their relationship doesn’t have that overtly sexual chemistry or a history that ties them together like other dramas- in this case they just happen to be two co-workers that become friends. The drama does well in making us believe that these two characters could fall for each other despite their flaws. It’s so nice to see both characters grow together, especially QZQ, who still has a long way to go but that’s fine with us. We’re happy watching this man-child realize his feelings for the girl he least expected to fall for. We also like the fact he didn’t dispute the challenge and just got on with it. The writer bypassed all the annoying rich boy antics and moved right onto the good stuff like him appreciating his first ever pay check – such a cute moment or him realising that life is less about money and more about people.

A love rival we really wanted to hate:

Seriously writer, you gave us a love rival that has just the WORST life ever. She’s from a broken family, an abusive father who abandoned her with a comatose mother and to top things off she grew up in an orphanage- that’s too much! If we were QZQ we would stay with her too. Yes, she’s sly, manipulative and an all round nasty bitch but still… her sob story is too much to completely hate her like we want to. The scene where she turned up at SXR’s house in QZQ’s shirt was the scene where we wanted to reach into the screen and throttle the harlot’s throat and the way she casually manipulates situations to get what she wants is annoying as hell but despite her evil antics- the woman just can’t win. Muhahah. We love how QZQ spends the whole time talking about SXR or thinking about her. Oh, how it must annoy her that despite her meddling, she still can’t hold QZQ’s attention for more than a minute. We love it. Hehehe.

Office Girl’s other love rival isn’t fairing any better. James Wen’s Xu Cheng Feng is kind of a letdown. Naturally we love how he makes QZQ so jealous and the way he looks at SXR is pretty hot, but his presence in the drama just doesn’t match up to the awesomeness of the OTP. His character isn’t enough of a threat to QZQ and as viewers we don’t care enough about him to jump ship and root for him. Which is a total shame because if anyone can do it, it would be James Wen after he stole our hearts in P.S Man. Unless QZQ becomes a total meathead or does something completely unforgivable, it’s unlikely that we’ll be rooting for this Old Xu- seriously, who asks people to call them Old anything when you’re under the age of 80? – come on! We hope he either really goes for it or he steps back completely and allows our ignorant OTP to get on with it. We’re not sure which we would prefer at this point because we really do love a jealous QZQ and we wouldn’t want it to be too easy for him to get the girl.

Other than loving the OTP, we love Le Le- she’s so funny. Seriously, how can someone that looks that cute be so fierce? We adore her; she makes us laugh with every scene she’s in. She’s the character that says what everyone else wants to say but doesn’t dare to. Love her.

Random Thoughts:

-QZQ is going to make her a house! Heeee- so sweet! Okay, it’s a doll’s house but still it’s all about the gesture.

-Is SXR ever going to be nice to QZQ again? He spends half the time defending her or thinking about something nice to do for her and she spends most of the time glaring or shouting at him. Poor guy.

-There are still 10 episodes to go. What are they going to do for that many episodes? Don’t ruin the OTP, we beg you writer!

Office Girls – First impressions

11 Oct

How lucky is Alice Ke in this drama? She has Roy Qiu AND James Wen falling in love with her character. No fair.

It’s like the drama gods were listening to our fan girl gushes and have finally given us exactly what we want – Roy and James in the same drama. Hooray.

This naturally comes at a price- in this case, it’s the fact that James has some fugly hair problems that need to be attended to immediately and once again he’s the second lead that doesn’t get the girl – Again! When will your time come James? The up side is the fact that at least he isn’t playing a cheater in this drama.  Another downside is that Roy isn’t all broody and hot like he was in Easy Fortune Happy Life – the drama that made us fall in love with him in the first place but hell, he’s still not doing too badly as the adorable/ slightly dorky lead who we can’t wait to see become a man.

Alice Ke’s depiction of Xing Ren is likable enough. She’s naturally a penny pinching, hardworking woman who takes no nonsense. Of course, Tdramas don’t have their leading ladies any other way- it’s like a drama law. We already love her interaction with Roy’s Zi Qi. They have the bickering, friendly banter down perfectly and we’re only on episode 1.  They also happen to be quite funny together as well, something we didn’t really expect from either character prior to tuning in to this drama, so that’s definitely a pleasant surprise. More importantly, we sense the potential for HOT chemistry between the OTP. We’re hoping that it’s not just wishful thinking or overactive imaginations on our part. Sadly it wouldn’t be the first time.  Hehehe.

Apart from loving the cast, we like pretty much everything else about this drama so far. We like the concept – its very old school in the: will he/ won’t he succeed scenario? Will he be able to keep his true identity from everyone around him? Plus how will he fall in love with the ordinary but kind hearted girl when the hot girl with greedy intentions is throwing herself at him?

This drama doesn’t have anything too innovative going for it but the pace, the feel and the OTP keep it floating along nicely. First impressions: So far so good.

Plus, did we mention we love Roy?
